Summer Road Trips – Keeping your car clean Tips

Summer Road Trips – Keeping your car clean Tips

You have spent all year keeping your home clean and doing all the fun adulting things in your life…. now it’s time to kick back and relax and take that family road trip.  So how and what should you do to keep your car clean?  Here are some of our basic thoughts when it comes to traveling and from bugs splattering on the windshield to dirt and grime getting kicked up onto the doors and rear, your once-pristine car may start looking grimy and dull. Protecting your paint job and keeping the outside of your vehicle sparkling clean requires being proactive while on the road.

How do you keep your vehicle looking its best while on the road this summer?

Bug goo, sap, road tar–the sooner you address those problems the better – these items can bake on your vehicle as you’re driving along hot summer roads and etch the paint, causing permanent damage.

Use microfiber towels, waterless car wash/wax, upholstery cleaner for spills, bug and tar remover made specifically for automobile paint and vehicle glass cleaner.  A clean windshield is essential for safe driving. Early morning and late afternoon create glare on dusty glass surfaces.

Pack a car care kit

To keep up with life on the road and the messes that come with it, make sure to pack a car care kit that can easily be stored in your trunk or cargo area.

Here is a list of some basic items whenever you go on road trips:
– Waterless wash and wax solution. These kinds of products work well for quick touch-ups, removing bugs, bird droppings and fresh water spots before they have a chance to bond to your car’s exterior and cause damage.
– Glass cleaner or glass cleaner wipes designed for automobile surfaces.
– Interior detailer wipes are great for impromptu clean-up on upholstery. Food and liquids can be safely removed to prevent odors, surface stains, and mold.
– Microfiber towels are great for both exterior and interior clean-ups or wipe-downs. They are absorbent and easy to clean.
Handheld vacuum you can easily store in your car for those unexpected spills.
– Clay bars to help remove hardened grit and grime. They are easy to stow and safely remove contaminants stuck to glass, wheels, and painted surfaces.
Some cleaning waxes add shine but don’t remove contaminants bonded to the car. Clay bars can remove smudgy swirls, grit, brake dust, and other contaminants, plus he says they can be used on just about any exterior surface.

Keep up with bug removal

While touchless car washes are great for deeper cleanings, be sure to spot-clean the front end of your car each time you stop for gas to maintain good visibility through the windshield and headlight lenses.

A bottle of bug remover spray and microfiber cloths to quickly dissolve and wipe away splattered bugs before they harden and bake onto the glass and paint.

Mind the sprinklers

When stopping at hotels or campgrounds, be mindful of sprinklers that could unexpectedly spray your car. Getting doused with sprinkler spray can leave behind unsightly water spots and stains that are tough to remove if they bake in the hot sun. Try to park away from sprinkler systems or get in the habit of drying your car off with microfiber towels after such a surprise shower.

Head to the car wash

Even with diligent spot cleaning, you’ll want to take your car to a self-serve or drive-through car wash during extended driving trips. This helps blast away road grime, tar, tree sap, dead bugs, and any other crud that builds up on your car’s exterior. Make sure to use the undercarriage wash and wheel cleaner functions too.

Spring Cleaning of some key rooms in the home – great checklist!

Spring Cleaning of some key rooms in the home – great checklist!

As much as I love fall and winter, by the time spring comes I’m ready to welcome the sunshine and warm breezes, the trees coming back to life, and the blooms opening their cheery faces. Most of all, I’m ready to fling open the windows (and blinds) and let that fresh air flow through rooms that have been shut in against the cold for months.

If fall and winter are a great time to clean in preparation for a bunch of time spent indoors, spring is a great time to clean because of all that time spent indoors. In fact, the practice of spring cleaning dates back centuries and has cultural and religious roots that span the globe.

Here are some of the areas to start with and a great checklist:

Kitchen
Clean out the fridge.
Clean out the freezer.
Clean your water and ice dispenser areas.
Get rid of entertaining items you didn’t use throughout the holiday season.
Toss broken dishware, duplicate kitchen tools, and items you don’t use.
Clean crumbs out of drawers.
Clean your coffee maker.
Clean your toaster oven.
Clean your oven.
Clean your vent hood screens.
Wash your garbage can and recycling bin.
Clean out your garbage disposal.
Wipe down cabinet and drawer fronts.
Clean any smudges on walls.
Clean light fixtures.

Bathroom
Thoroughly clean the bathtub interior and shower.
Rinse off shampoo, conditioner, and other containers.
Replace rags and loofahs, as needed.
Clean trash cans.
Clean the toilet thoroughly.
Clean showerhead.
Wash shower curtain liner.
Mop floors.
Declutter under-sink cabinets and medicine cabinets.
Clean light fixtures.

Bedroom (and Closet)
Put out-of-season clothing in storage.
Wash throw pillows and/or covers.
Wash pillows.
Wash duvet cover, comforter, blankets, etc.
Dust and clean the headboard.
Vacuum mattress.
Polish wooden furniture.
Clean closet floor.
Declutter seasonal clothes and shoes that weren’t worn during the colder months.
Clean under furniture.

Kid’s Bedroom Cleaning Tips

Kid’s Bedroom Cleaning Tips

Once your child learns how to properly clean their room, this will save everyone time while creating a clean space everyone is happy to spend time in. Clean rooms also create an environment that’s easier to focus on homework.  Here are some tips for cleaning and organizing your kid’s bedroom, that even your young ones can handle.

1. Put Away All Clothes

Any clothes that are thrown around the room should be either hung up if they can be worn again, or put in the hamper if they are dirty. During this process, you might even encourage your children to donate or toss anything clothing items that no longer fit or are damaged.

2. Make The Bed

If the sheets aren’t clean, strip the bed and put the dirty linens in the laundry. If the sheets are clean, make the bed. Encourage your children to make their bed the first thing in the morning after they wake-up.

3. Clear The Clutter

Any clutter in the room such as dirty dishes, books, toys, or video game controllers, should go back where they belong. If there isn’t a permanent spot for something, make one. Any toys that are dirty should go in a neat pile to get cleaned later.

4. Clean All the Surfaces

All you need is a little warm water and some dish soap on a cloth, and use this to wipe down any surfaces. You also can use cleaning wipes. Be sure to get window sills, bookshelves, the computer, doorknobs, and really anywhere that collects dust.

For glass areas, use a glass cleaner and a soft cloth or paper towel. This includes bedroom mirrors and windows. Coffee filters and newspapers are also great streak free solutions for cleaning glass surfaces.

5. Vacuum

Vacuum the carpet and any furniture items with crumbs. Try to make it a habit to vacuum at least once a month.

6. The Floor

You want to save cleaning the floor for last because it gets dirty when you’re moving everything around. First be sure to pick up any small items on the ground like coins, or other small things that could easily get vacuumed up.

If the floor is carpeting, vacuum. If the floor is vinyl or hardwood then sweep with a broom or dustpan. Then use a mop or a towel that’s in a cleaning bucket to clean up any dirt that’s stuck on.

Try to clean up a little bit every day so there’s less work to do when you really have to clean. Every day your kids can put away clutter, wipe down surfaces, put away their clothes, and make the bed.

7. Make Cleaning Fun

Cleaning seems like such a daunting task, there are ways that you can make cleaning fun for your kids. Here are some ideas.

8. Get Your Kids Excited To Clean

While games are fun, it’s also important that your kids understand why they’re cleaning. It can be hard at times to motivate your kids to clean their room. All you need is the right tools and incentives to help your kids understand why cleaning is so important.

Here are some things you might want to try discussing with your kid that will help them understand better.

Cleaning Your Home Office

Cleaning Your Home Office

1. Start with a clean slate.
Take everything off of your desk, even if you know for sure you’ll be putting it back. Some people thrive when their desk is completely cleared of everything but the necessities. Others need a little controlled chaos to spark ideas and get creative. The key is to be intentional with what you allow to live on your desk so you don’t end up completely buried in a clutter avalanche. Add back only what you need and what makes you happy.

2. Wipe down your desk surface, keyboard, mouse, desk lamp, and any other high-touch hotspots.
You can’t be productive if you’re sick in bed. Wipe down all the surfaces and items handled regularly, like your keyboard and mouse, to minimize the spread of germs and accumulation of dust. (Get more tips from our cleaning experts on properly cleaning electronic devices in a previous post!) Then be sure to add these spots to your regular cleaning checklist.

3. Sort through paper clutter and get rid of what you don’t need.
Keep a wastepaper basket near your desk, and maybe a paper shredder, too. Paper clutter, like junk mail, fliers, and receipts, has a way of multiplying and accumulating without us realizing, often because we put off making decisions about each piece when we first encounter it. To keep paper clutter under control, sort through it regularly. Depending on how quickly it piles up for you, plan to do this anywhere from once a week to once a month.

Sort all the papers from your desk into four piles:
Toss anything you don’t need that doesn’t contain personal information (credit card numbers, bank account numbers, social security number, etc.).

Shred anything you don’t need that does contain personally identifying information. Invest in a small personal shredder or take your shredding to an office supply or shipping store that offers shredding service. (Pro tip: Take advantage of free shredding events sponsored by municipalities or businesses around the end of tax season!)

Keep important documents you’ll need in the future and file them away for safekeeping. When deciding whether to keep something, remember that many documents can now be accessed online, including instruction manuals, receipts, pay stubs, and tax forms.

Address things that require action, such as paying a bill, returning a purchase, or filing your taxes. Take care of these things as soon as you’re able to avoid amassing an overwhelming pile or, worse, missing a deadline and facing penalty fees.

4. Keep what you need within reach.
Think about what you use when you’re working. Make sure those things are on your desk or nearby. Having what you need at the ready can help you avoid interruptions to your workflow and save you time. If there’s room on your desk, add a small desktop bookshelf or file trays. Keep a set of rolling file drawers within arm’s reach. Add a bulletin board on the wall above your desk. Set yourself up for streamlined success.

  • Clean your microwave and other small appliances.
  • Give your dishwasher a thorough cleaning.
